How To Set Up Skype
May 28, 2009

Skype is one of the easiest and most reliable methods of communication through the Internet. It is extremely simple to use, and there is absolutely no cost involved in using it. One of the features of Skype that stands out includes having the opportunity to talk to other people all over the world who are running the same Skype program at no cost.
This almost seems too good to be true. How can a company operate without accruing any costs from millions of calls each day and not make a loss? The answer is that unlike a normal telephone or mobile phone call, Skype calls are made over the internet through a system called VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). By allowing two casual computer users (Skype can also be used on other devices too) with an Internet connection, a normal conversation can be held just as if you were talking to someone down the block on a home phone. Just think of it as free calls over the Internet. VoIP is easy, because if you have an Internet connection you are basically set up, and you can enjoy the freedom of making calls all around the world absolutely free.
On top of that, Skype also has the capability to allow users to interact as if talking face-to-face by the use of a webcam. Webcams are basically cameras but are used to operate programs like Skype in order to create a live feed to another user over the Internet. Having a webcam means that it is now possible to see and talk to people all over the world without having to spend copious amounts of money making international phone calls. And it’s not limited to just calls outside the country – Skype can be used anywhere with access to a computer and Internet. The webcam is an optional feature, and you don’t need to have one to use Skype.
So what do you need in order to start using Skype as a free tool for communication?
The Bare Minimum:
- A computer
- The application which can be downloaded free from the Skype webpage
That’s it! You don’t even need a microphone and speaker to start using Skype, because it also acts as a chat platform where you can type messages and the other person who you are trying to reach will receive the message. This feature is just like MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger.
The Recommended:
- A computer
- The application
- Headphones, mic and some sort of speaker
All laptops nowadays will come in with a built in speaker, and most will have a microphone as well. So laptop users don’t need to worry about setting up Skype. Otherwise, all you need is your usual speaker system that you use for your computer and a microphone. A microphone can be obtained separately, or through a headphone with microphone built in.
Optional:
- Webcam
If you want others to be able to see you, you can use a webcam. Lots of laptops already have a built in webcam so you can integrate it with Skype straight away – you don’t even need to configure it, Skype is smart enough to automatically detect if you have a webcam plugged in!
There are millions of calls being made with Skype every day, ranging from home to personal and even very important business. It’s safe, its easy and most of all it is absolutely free. Don’t become discouraged by the technological terms you hear when people talk about Skype, because the program is an absolutely amazing technological innovation.
