Computer Monitor Buyer’s Guide

The computer monitor is one of the most important components of a computer system. Without it, you could not see what is going on or what you are doing, rendering your computer useless. Computer buyers often don’t even put much thought into their monitor choice, but there are a few things to think about when buying a computer monitor:
- CRT or LCD – these are the two most common types of monitors and they are very different from each other. CRT monitors are large and bulky, but they provide the best colour and graphical experience. LCD monitors, on the other hand, are thin and sleek, which is why they are becoming very popular. LCD technology is advancing, continually making it hard to see a real difference in experience. CRT monitors are generally less expensive than LCD monitors.
- Standard or Widescreen – widescreen monitors are becoming more popular, but it depends on your needs and space available.
- Screen Size – the screen size is usually determined by two factors: budget and space. The larger the screen you want, the more it will cost, and the more space it will take up. 17” is a common, usable size, but you can buy monitors upwards of 24”.
- Resolution – this is usually not an issue because most monitors can display at multiple resolutions. Just keep in mind that a higher resolution means more usable space on your screen.
- Connections – always make sure the monitor you are purchasing will connect to your computer. Some newer, high-definition monitors might need an extra cable or port.
Because you will be using your monitor the entire time you use the computer, you should, if possible, test out the monitor you are intending on purchasing beforehand. Always make sure that you are getting what you need before buying.
